The OWL
MS20101 고은민

Between the big, green trees there was a world of birds. All kinds of birds gathered together and lived in harmony. Birds showed off their singing abilities and their beautiful colors.
However, the owl couldn’t get along with other birds. Other birds ignored the owl as he was so ugly and wasn’t colorful. Some of the birds were even afraid of the owl – two big, yellow eyes, strong beak and sharp claws were enough to scare all the birds – and his crying sound in midnight. Therefore, owl was always alone staying inside the tree.
There were some events and parties in the bird’s world. Above all, the singing contest was the biggest and most significant competition. Once a year, they had the singing competition. Birds practiced everyday, looking forward to the competition. The owl also wanted to participate in the competition. He trained himself in the night secretly.
Finally, the competition was held in the square. Other birds came up to the stage and showed off their own voices with wonderful songs. At last, it was the owl’s turn. Other birds started to talk in whisper with doubtful looks.
A few seconds after the owl began his song, other birds stopped him, since his singing was horrible. He escaped from the place quickly as possible. Since then, other birds ignored him more and more which made him to be miserable.
One day, as usual, the owl was the only bird awake in the night. He was sitting on the branch, blaming himself for being ugly and scary looking and not being able to sing well. He thought that if he was just a normal bird, who looks beautiful and sings well, he would have had a lot of friends.
Then, all of a sudden, the owl heard some rustling sounds. The owl had better sights and hearing abilities than other birds, so he could even hear very soft sounds. The owl paid close attention to where the sound was actually coming from. Then, he found out that it was a snake, swiftly moving to get near the nest of a bird!
The owl was so surprised, and all he could think of was that he should do something to warn and wake the birds up, so that they can escape from the danger. The owl felt so nervous that he tried to sing with his horrible voice, because he thought that the birds might wake up after hearing his terrible singing noise.
“Hoo~ Hoo~”
The owl began singing loudly, that it echoed throughout the whole forest. All of the birds woke up, heard the rustling sound, and was able to escape safely.
“Oh my god! I cannot imagine what would have happened if there weren’t an owl!”
“I definitely agree. Without an owl, half of us must have faced the death.”
Because of the unfortunate incident just happened, every bird in the forest was in panic. However, they soon felt the relief and they started to feel both guilt and appreciation toward an owl. Suddenly, the nightingale made a suggestion with her beautiful voice to all of the birds in the forest.
“Attention! Why don’t we let an owl to join us? He is ugly and terrible at singing, but he has his own special ability at night! I really, really want to apologize to him for bullying and even ignoring him, and also thank to him for his kindness and braveness!”
Every bird in the forest shouted “yes!” to express how grateful they are to sustain their lives.
Next day, birds made presents and wrote letters for an owl. He could feel the warm heart of them, and shyly he said,
“Everyone thank you so much. I am really glad to become a friend of yours. To celebrate this happiest day of my life, why don’t all of you come over to my house and have a wonderful party?”
“Of course!”
“Why not?”
“Sure!”
All of the birds, and owls had a lovely happy-ending; in other words, “they lived happily ever after” just like every other fairy tale ends up with. I even heard the news from the cuckoo that birds had a sleep over at an owl’s house.
Lesson
Through this story, we were trying to explain and touch the ‘lookism’ issue as well as the idea that everyone is valuable in their own ways. In the story, the owl is the one being bullied by others because he is ugly, and he cannot sing well. It also said that some birds were afraid of owl and avoided him. Due to his outlook and lack of abilities in certain criteria, he is bullied by other birds.
However, when it comes to the issue of protection, the owl saves all the other birds in the night. This was possible because owl was awaked at night and he sang his own way of singing. Through this event, the birds get to learn how important the owl is, and are ashamed of all the bad things they’ve done to the owl, including bulling.
An owl made birds and even us to realize the importance of judging people, or birds based on their internal values instead of the appearance. Every single one of us in this world must have his or her special abilities, or talents. We are all different in a way of looking, thinking, and singing. Thus, I would like to emphasize the importance of acknowledging the differences among individuals, and respecting them. Because we are so precious!

Korean Tigers – Why are tigers all gone in Korea?

From the ancient times, the tigers roamed the Korean peninsula. People worshipped them as Gods and Guardians who would protect Korea from other foreign forces, such as Japanese pirates coming from the southern sea. Sometimes the God of tigers sent messages to people by prophets who went to the Taeback Mountains to get them. Tigers had been the part of Korean peoples’ lives.
There is a famous legend that people believe about the tigers. In the Dankun legend, which is about the creation of Gojoseon, the first country of Korean peninsula, a tiger and a bear comes to the son of God and says that they want to become human beings. To test their perseverance, the son of God told the bear and tiger to eat only garlic and wormwoods for 100 days deep inside a cave, without looking at any sunlight. What is normally known to people is that the bear endured those pains, but the tiger couldn’t bear the pain, so escaped from the cave. However, Korean people believed it as different. The tiger could easily eat those foods and live in the cave, but it didn’t want to live under the reign of the son of God. As a result, he pretended he is going out since he can’t endure the pain. The tiger then makes another country in the lower side of the peninsula. So finally, Korean peninsula had Gojoseon in upper continental land of Korean peninsula, while other countries of tiger’s reign were in the lower part of peninsula, land near the oceans. People who live in lower part of Korean peninsula, including Korea in the past and Chosun, had all believed in the tigers as protectors.
Korean people started to live in one united country since Korea dynasty. When they fought against foreign powers, such as China and Mongolia, the tigers helped people by spirit. They gave courage, passion, and power to people to fight against other forces. With these support, Korea and Chosun dynasty could protect Korea from other foreign forces invading Korea. People thanked to their tigers and the God of tigers. Living under tigers’ protection, there was great peace in the whole Korea and individuals’ lives.
Probably the most famous incident when the tigers helped the people of Korea directly is the war with Japan on Im Jin Year. One day in 1592, Japanese people claimed they need to go through Korean peninsula to attack Ming, a country in China. However, the God of tigers let prophets tell people about the true purpose that the Japanese had, attacking Korea. The smart people like Lee Yi who listened to the tigers told the king of Chosun to prepare for War. However, the King was busy doing other things and rejected the opinion. Eventually, Japanese forces started to come to Chosun and win many fights, and Chosun got into a crisis to lose in the war. People started to lose hope, and seemed to be beaten there. God of tigers thought he really needs to get this Japanese people from Korea. So, he turned into a human being to save Chosun. The God of Tiger as human is known as Sun Shin Lee to us. Beating the Japanese in many fights, the atmosphere of the war changed. With the help of the God of tiger (Sun Shin Lee) the Korea successfully overcame the war.
However, as more foreign forces threatened Chosun to open its door, there were many internal conflicts between people arguing we should open the door and people saying we should focus on defending the nation. Foreign people enticed people by new products, such as coffee and chocolate, and people started to get addicted to them. As a result, more efforts have been made to open the door, and people who didn’t want those efforts appealed prophets to listen to what the God of tigers says. Then, they said the God wants them to fight against them because it will create huge problems of domination. However, it was already over the line. People used the foreign products for their everyday lives, and foreign forces threatened to higher the price of the products unless they start trading with them. Ignoring what the God and prophets said, Chosun opened its door to foreign ships, and Chosun started rapidly changing.
After that, the people were no longer listening to the God of tigers. Even though the God made many warnings through natural disasters, people didn’t think it as the result of their decisions. Their lives became more and more vicious, and armies started to play around. The whole nation seemed to be not doing their work, and the national power hit the ground.
Several years passed, and Japanese people again approached to Korea in 1900s. They proposed some agreements to Korean people and again deceived people by those agreements. They tried to break the amiable relationship between Chung, a country in China after Myung, and Korea to let Korea alone. Those efforts were successful due to Korean people not concentrating on work, and finally Japanese people took over the land. People were suddenly dominated by Japanese, and it was too late to make as it had been. Tigers eventually lost their trust to Korean people, and left to Russian mountains, abandoning Korean people. After that incident, Korea was under the reign of Japan for 36 years, suffering and regretting to listen what the God had said.
Today, there are very few tigers in Korean peninsula. They all left from Korean peninsula since Korean people hadn’t listened to what they say. Now, the tigers are registered as ‘important remains in Korea,’ and served again. Well, I’m not sure if they will come back since Koreans changed our attitude, but anyways, this is why the tigers are all gone from Korea.
